Peace Brrrrrrinnnnng-er

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

A Ha Ha Helen Szollosy, happy I got myself to this place, moment!

I’ve shared many ways to ‘turn the beat around’ in run on thought and emotional, thinking – out on on website blog. I’ve shared about turning negative worrisome thoughts to affirming/positive/repetitious thoughts; seeing negative blocks as ‘building blocks’ etc.

So …

I received a letter on my door (as did all the other condo owners) this afternoon. My first thought was, don’t open it, it’s another crazy letter from the Board!

Of course, the more I focused on NOT opening it, the BIGGER THE PROBLEM WITH THE LETTER appeared in my mind. Ha Ha! I ‘could’ see this and LAUGH at myself (this was a great growth moment!)

So, I approached the letter, took a deep relaxing breath and opened it. *pfew (such power this letter had over my emotions and mental health!)

Must have been printed on HEAVY BOND WEIGHT CARD STOCK, ya think?

So, it was an announcement of the newly elected Board members and a reviewing of the basic condo rules, yadda yadda yadda. I was familiar with a majority of them, but they threw in a few new ones.

Without going into details, this condo association has been a whirlwind of emotional, high flying activity for the past two years. Being a new owner and condo member, I was disappointed to have moved into such an emotionally unstable environment. Doorbell ringing due to board member resignations, two petitions going around with more doorbell ringing; condo neighbors coming to my door to tell me about parking space rules when it wasn’t me or my company in their spaces, etc etc

I renamed the place: Loony-fields Condominiums! (Hey! It makes me LAUGH to relieve the stress!)

So, I resolved the stress from my body being JARRED everytime one of the Loonie-field petitioners or board members would come BRINNNG BRRRRINNNNGING at my door bell. (They don’t seem to comprehend these are small, 2 bedroom units and the bell can be heard quite easily the first ring, thank you very much!) I started to place a little piece of paper between my screen/storm door lapping over the door bell button. It read: Please do not disturb.

Ahhhhh! Sweet peace! For the entire winter, I finally had a peaceful home environment. Well – LAUGH OUT LOUD here – they included in the new rules: No signs are to be placed on or near the units (AH HA HA HA). I’m thinking they were going through door bell ringing and petition ringing withdrawal. Maybe they need a mindfulness meditation group or Prozac?

So, I went out and dutifully took down my PEACE BRRRRRINGER. *smile

The other new note was: Please remove birdbaths from patios. Yep – I had a birdbath and was enjoying watching a fat Robin splashing around in it yesterday. So, out I went to remove the bird bath from my patio.

I should note here, prompt attention was needed due to a threat of a $50 fine for non-compliance.

WELL! How did I practice what I preach? I brought the beautiful, metalic-chip lined birth bath bowl into my home and thoroughly washed and disinfected it. The base is heavy wrought iron. The edge of the bowl is a rusty metal look. This all went very well with my Interior Design scheme.

I set the birthbath near my sliding glass door, filled it with water to create a reflective pool, and placed a large vanilla candle in the middle with five smaller candles encircling the larger.

As I sit here typing this blog, I am relaxed, smiling, and enjoying the candlelit, reflective, peaceful focal point I have created.

Ahhhhhh….*sigh and smile. THANK GOODNESS I ‘turned my thinking around’, let go of my fear of the enormous, monstrous letter and read it!

I NOW HAVE A BEAUTIFUL ACCENT to my home interior!

Glad I practiced what I preach!

What IS perfect, anyway? Bea Gaude’

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

Allow me to introduce a character I created called: Bea Gaude’ (pronounced Gaw-day), Fashion Consultant.
Bea was created when Ha Ha Helen was invited to a Halloween party and she didn’t have a costume. Helen threw together mismatched items from her closet, put on cat glasses, created business cards went to the party. Bea was a big hit!

Perhaps it was her floral print skirt, with her plaid jacket and woven tapestry print purse. Either way, Bea came to BE!

Bea is PURE PERFECTION!

What IS perfect, anyway? Bea is here, in my latest video blog, to set you on the path to BEing the YOU, you were meant to be.

If someone approaches and tells you, ‘You Don’t Fit In!’ respond: THANK YOU!

Be a trend setter, be yourself! P-E-R-F-E-C-T, perfect is what it means to ME, says BEA!

Baghdad Cafe’ or Lily Cafe’?

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

There was a movie years ago called Bagdad Cafe’. It was about a Diner in the middle of nowhere; found by folks traveling coast to coast in the U.S. The variety of Bohemian characters in the movie is amazing! It is definitely worth watching!

Well, I recently discovered my own little ‘Baghdad Cafe’ known as Lily Cafe’ in Carlisle, Pennsylvania (USA). I know the Lao owner whose family has had Thai restaurants in the area for over 10 years. They GOT ME with the first Red Curry, Number 10 spicy dish, I ordered! I’ve geen going back, frequently, ever since!

I wrote a book called: ‘Life is a Song in the Key of Love’ or Growing Up with the Embarrassment of Prejudice. It has to do with becoming aware of learned/inherited bias/prejudice that isn’t personally felt. It is an autobiographical/philosophical discussion, encouraging society to open communication on the topic. The book discusses appreciating life in ALL its forms of expression; comparing it to the beautiful sounds made from the complexity of sheetmusic. It was inspired by a 1930s song by Joe Ahlert called: Life is a Song. The key line of inspiration being: “Let’s take our hearts and dip them in rhyme …. make life a song!”

Well, I’ve recently gotten bold and set up my own book signing at the Lily Cafe’. I chose this location because of it sitting in the middle of the Dickinson College campus of Carlisle, PA; as well as its BAGHDAD CAFE’ nature!

For example, I arrived last evening to place my book signing poster in the window as well as some flyers around the cafe’. As is the norm, Antonia Anaban (master jazz musician) was playing his beautiful, background music to set the mood. Antonio is of Phillipine background, having grown up in Hawaii. He learned his craft from his talented father. His family made the commitment to move to the Carlisle PA area so the sons could be involved with the Central Pennsylvania Ballet.

One evening, a free-spirited college student stopped in to pick up his take-out order. Within 10 minutes, the student had given Tony three chords to play and the ‘talented bohemian soul’ was just spilling out original lyrics, in rhythm and rhyme to Tony’s chords!

Last evening, I met ‘Larry’; that’s his American name. Larry is of Spanish/Cuban background. His father from Spain and mother from Cuba. Larry was providing security guard services to the cafe’ while it was closed for a few days. Larry being another beautiful, free, bohemian spirit was sitting at one of the tables. Tony sat across from him and casual conversation started between us. We discussed the proper pronunciation of Larry’s first and last names. Don’t ask me, I struggled a bit but made the effort!

Next thing you know, Tony is playing a Spanish love song and Larry’s beautiful vocals are accompanying Tony! Since I had my camcorder, I got their permission to record the wonderful, impromptu moment! It can be seen out on my You Tube Channel: www.youtube.com/Helenoflafolot

After a bit, another ‘tall, dark and handsome’ gentleman arrived. He now sat across from Larry, as Tony had taken the small stage area to start ‘officially’ serading the customers, which hadn’t yet arrived. Talk about Baghdad Cafe’!

Being Hungarian myself, Tony revealed that the newest bohemian character in the cafe’ was also Hungarian! Tony has his own, modern rendition of a Hungarian tune that he likes to play for me. He started to play it for (who I found out later, was) Mike.

In talking to ‘Mike’ he revealed that his sister was none other than: ‘Angel’ Wallenda! (a.k.a. Elizabeth Pentya)
Angel met and married Steve Wallenda in New York, went on to join the family’s high wire acts. Angel had to have her leg amputated due to cancer. But, Angel STILL did the high wire acts with the artificial leg! What a woman! Angel only lived to be 28, with the cancer eventually taking over. But, I feel Angel lived a FULL life! What a woman! Mike mentioned that there was information about his sister on the internet. He was proud that she had had an article written about her in Reader’s Digest magazine! What a famous, admired woman for having lived only 28 years. I’d say she lived her life to the fullest! Mike got to be a part of the Wallenda family act as an announcer as well as ‘clowning!’.

My life has had much synchronicity lately. Last Sunday, I presented my talk ‘Seeing With New Eyes’ at a Women’s Conference. I talked about seeing life as a gift no matter what. I talked about my childhood experiences now being seen as the gifts that made me into the empowered woman I am, today! THE IRONY! I was reading about Angel Wallenda on the internet. One of her quotes noted that ‘if she hadn’t gone through the struggles she had as a child, she wouldn’t have been able to handle her challenge with the cancer and leg amputation.’ [to share a similar thought last Sunday and then hear it reaffirmed through an encounter with her brother BOGGLED MY MIND!]

Angel was also quoted as saying that she was thrilled that people not only admired and looked up to her with her highwire act skills, wearing an artificial leg; but that they admired her for her strength and courage in fighting her cancer! What a woman! WOW!

So, what were the odds that I would give that talk last Sunday, then meet the brother of a woman who overcame childhood abuse by her father, being taken in and out of her home and placed in and out of foster homes, only to become the dynamic woman she was! WHAT A MENTOR!

Talk about Baghdad Cafe a.k.a. Lily Cafe’. There I sat in the presence of Larry, Antonio, and Mike being humbled and feeling perfectly at home – in that Bohemian, Beautiful atmosphere filled with such amazing individuals!

Focus! Focus! …ha ha

Friday, March 26th, 2010

Are you having a little trouble staying focused?
Does your mind wander?
Are thoughts flying in and out of your head due to your Busy Bee schedule?

Well, try; I said TRY to get centered and focus on this day’s Highlighted Helen of LAFOLOT Motivational Moment video:

FOCUS ME.mp4

Inspired by the likes of: Professor Irwin Corey, Lily Tomlin and Robin Williams

SEE, if you can, THE MESSAGE – wrapped within the collage of movement, rambling and messiness. Stay focused, now!

I’ll bet the message will work itself into your busy thoughts, and at some point in the day, come out as a laugh or a giggle. Then, you’ll get focused!

My video motivational messages are MEANT to be imperfect. IMPERFECTIONS are remembered!
Think about LIFE in general. Don’t people look for the 4 Leaf Clover vs. all the 3 Leaf Clovers?

Do you stay FOCUSED on a Picasso painting trying to figure it out vs a landscape that gives a feeling of ahhhh.

My intention is to motivate and inpsire others – MY METHOD is with messiness, mayhem and getting you to remember the thougth due to the imperfections.

HAVE FUN STAYING FOCUSED!

Live life in A-MAZE-ment … even if it’s a little out of focus!

ME! flipped upward is WE!

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

As a motivational speaker, I give a talk called ‘Seeing With New Eyes!’ People have asked me to share more about this.
Well, being ME!, I have found that I like using visuals, movement, rhythm and rhyme to get a message across. This is my style; it may not suit everyone.

I like talking about looking at life in Mirror-opposites. For example, do you SEE uphill as bad or good? Do you SEE downhill as bad or good? If you are considered to be ‘upwardly mobile’ in the corporate world, are you happy or stressed? How do you SEE the experience?

A You Tube video is worth a thousand words! So sit back and watch my visual/auditory version of: DON’T BE A ‘STEWIE’ BE A ‘DO-IE’ or ME! flipped upward is WEeeeeee!

Worry yourself happy, healthy and successful?

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

Did you ever notice how you can be having a perfectly beautiful day, an easy going, ordinary day; and one little thing goes wrong that puts a splotch of ink on the page making THAT all you can think of? OK, maybe it’s just me?

I read an article, recently by: Waldman and Newburg (University of Pennsylvania Center for Spirituality and the Mind)
The article dealt with how our mind (logic and reasoning) and heart (emotions) can impact the amount of focus/intensity on our life experiences.

They talked about the intensity of emotion that gets added to thought, when a negative experience happens in our life. It was mentioned that the feeling, thought going into a common-everyday occurence or the enjoyment of a pleasant moment, isn’t as intense as a stressful, negatively perceived moment.

This goes in line with worrying about something that was stressful on the job, an embarrassing moment, a tragedy, etc. We’ve all heard the phrase YOU’RE GOING TO WORRY YOURSELF SICK!’

Well, as I read their article, I thought – ‘Why not worry myself healthy, happy, and successful?’ If I’m such a WORRIER to begin with, why not use it to my advantage?

As I stated earlier, I can be having a perfectly fine day – then I do something embarrassing, get caught up in an emotional moment, and THAT’s where my focus stays – worrying worrying worrying.

SO – I decided I was going to feel and use that intense emotions we have available as well as how GOOD I’ve become at worrying – to MY ADVANTAGE!

How do we do this? Think about what you do when you worry; the thought keeps POPPING back into your mind no matter what you are doing.

Here’s the HA HA HELEN METHOD of worrying yourself happy, healthy and successful!

SAMPLE WORRY STATEMENT NUMBER 1: “I just KNOW I’m going to get that job I applied for, I just know it! *sigh… there’s nothing that can be done, this stuff happens to me all the time! It’s inevitable! I’m going to get that new job and promotion; because that’s just the way my life goes!”

SAMPLE WORRY STATEMENT NUMBER 2: “I just KNOW I’m going to lose all these extra pounds I’ve put on (in a healthy way); I just KNOW it. What can I do, I just know how to live and eat healthy, so it’s inevitable that I’m going to lose the weight in a healthy way *sigh… what are you gonna do… that’s just the way things are for me.”

SAMPLE WORRY STATEMENT NUMBER 3: “I just KNOW I’m going to be successful at my business! I just know it! *sigh… that’s JUST the way things are for me, there’s nothing that’s going to change it – I’m going to be successful and that’s that…”

HA HA PROCESS:
CONSTANTLY REPEAT, REPEAT, REPEAT
FEEL, FEEL, FEEL
WORRY those positive thoughts into reality!

HECK! If you’re going to WORRY about stuff, why not WORRY about GOOD stuff you WANT to happen!

This has been a Highlighted, Ha Ha Helenof LAFOLOT worry-FULL brainstorm! OR, just another Ha Ha Helen of LAFOLOT HAIR-BRAINED IDEA? (oh gosh! which is it? now I’m worrying…)

Live Life in Amazement!
Live Life! Laugh Often!
and worry yourself healthy, wealthy and successfull…

Seeing With New Eyes! Shift your awareness!

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

As a motivational/inspirational speaker, whose intention is to – ironically – Motivate and Inspire others; I presented my talk “Seeing With New Eyes’ this past Sunday.

I was THRILLED to be asked to give this talk! It is part of a big AH HA!, major awakening, shifting of awareness moment in my life occurring at age 49.

Since the talk is about shifting one’s self-perceptions and awareness, to see the gift and sacredness of all life, what occurred the morning of the talk caused me to LAUGH at myself!

It’s always fun (NOT!) showing up at venues where you are ‘in the dark’ as to what is going on, other than you are a speaker. When I arrived at the event the day before, I was scheduled to give a ‘Laughter? Let’s Get Serious!’ talk. I had to make use of my smile and laughter therapy on myself, to get through the confusing process.

I eventually found the room where I would be speaking; rearranged the room to suit my presentation; and placed handouts and give-a-ways on the chairs. (I had asked for handouts to be supplied, since I wasn’t getting paid – but no support staff appeared as well as no handouts.) I walked back out to the entrance area and saw some presenters with name badges. I asked them if they were having any more luck than I was; ‘no’ was the response. Well, I presented my talk/laughter wellness session and it went ‘WELL’. HA HA

The FUNNY thing is, when I arrived the next morning to give my ‘Seeing With New Eyes’ talk; the process hadn’t improved.
I still had very little information; and it was the same for the support staff. There were a lot of looks of shock and confusion when questions were asked.

I asked in which room would I be speaking? I was told: 3rd Floor, Ambassador Suite. Well, with a name like THAT, how could I go wrong? I was told it was to the right after I got off the elevator.

So, I wheel my handy-dandy ‘dolly’ cart to the elevators, press 3, exit the elevator and head to the right. Voila! I found the Ambassador Suite! I open the door, maneuver my cart into the room and – IT’S NOT SET UP! There are only 6 chairs! The chairs are sitting along the wall, around the room – behind 6 long cloth-covered tables!

I instantly feel deflated! You don’t want to know what was going through my mind. *smile I had given a talk the previous morning, and another Laughter Program at a church the previous evening; I was exhausted.

I’m thinking, SO I’M GOING TO HAVE TO GO GET CHAIRS AND SET ‘THIS’ ROOM UP, TOO! *sigh I let the cart of stuff in the room with the door open. I step outside the room in frustration and exhaustion. I see some medical rep vendors sitting at their tables outside the room. They see my face (it’s very readable) and smile. I say: ‘I can’t believe this! I’m supposed to be giving my talk in here and it’s dark, with no chairs and a bunch of long tables around the walls!’ The ‘hand therapist’ points to a sign across the hall from her table. The sign reads: ‘SEEING WITH NEW EYES’ 10:00-11:00am. I look at the room name and it is the ‘Pennslvania Room’.

I say to her, as I regroup; ‘You know, I’m not going to get bothered. It’s a different room than what they told me; but it’s set up and I’m thrilled!’ I go to the Ambassador Room, retrieve my stuff, set it up in the OTHER room. The chairs were all bunched against the walls, so I spread them out and create more speaker-viewing space so the audience can better receive the talk.

With the actual room located and set up, I got out to talk to the hand therapist. It turns out the soul was bored stiff. No one was coming up to the third floor to hear about hand therapy! I ask her, do you mind if I run through my talk with you while we sit here? She offered to be a willing participant!

Then, I said: ‘You know, it’s so ironic that the room name they gave me ended up being different than the room that was set up!’ I continued: ‘My talk is on SEEING WITH NEW EYES! If I hadn’t STEPPED OUTSIDE THE ROOM (the box) and SHIFTED MY PERCEPTION/AWARENESS in your direction to see the room assigned, I would have REMAINED in that dark/inadequate room STEWING and being FRUSTRATED and ANGRY. I concluded, THAT’s what my talk is all about!’

I became so excited! I had to laugh! I said to her, I SHIFTED the direction of my talk when I was preparing at home this morning. I wanted to refresh it and take it in a lighter direction. Then, this happened – I can actually apply it to what I’ll be talking about and folks will relate!

So, it appears, the MESSAGE we seem to need to hear ourselves, is the message we choose to deliver to others in our roles as Motivational/Inspirational speakers. The FUNNY thing is, it keeps presenting itself in our lives to see if WE STILL GET IT!

GOT IT? *smile

Live BOLD and in Italics!

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Oh the synchronicity of it all!

Let me run through this quickly:
1) Bought an old piece of sheetmusic when I was in my early 20s, at a shopping mall sidewalk sale; just because it was ‘pretty’ and I could frame it to hang on my wall in my bedroom. It was by Carrie Jacobs Bond.
2) Jump forward 10 years or so… I volunteer to answer phones at our local Public Access TV station for a funraiser.
3) I hear the Classical Music DJ mention he will play a song by: ‘Carrie Jacobs Bond’
4) I tell him, ‘Oh, I have HIS ‘My Soul’ sheetmusic in a frame at my home!
5) He tells me – Carrie Jacobs Bond is a SHE! He proceeds to tell me all about this wonderful SOUL!

Here’s a tidbit from Wikipedia: “Because Jacobs-Bond’s attempts to have her music published were repeatedly turned down by the male-dominated music industry of the day, she resorted to establishing her own sheet music publishing company in 1896. As a result, she was one of very few women in the industry and perhaps the only one to own every word of every song she wrote.” You’ll have to read the full article, this woman was amazing!

WHAT A ROLE MODEL-MENTOR! I unknowingly bought the sheetmusic of a dynamic woman of the 19th century, and had it hanging in my bedroom; ‘just because I liked the artwork on the front’, for 10 years! Turns out, Carrie Jacobs Bond even did the artwork!

It now hangs in my bathroom. The words to the song MY SOUL are so beautiful, and the pastel watercolors are soothing.

Jump forward to me now at age 51; stepping out in daring ways, creating MUSICAL, LAUGHING, AND AUTHORSHIP MAYHEM! HA HA!

I thought of Carrie Jacobs Bond and her stepping out to write music, sing in parlors and starting her own publishing company when I moved forward with setting up my self-published book signing on April 2 and 9, 2010 at a Carlisle PA Thai Cafe! ['Life is a Song in the Key of Love' a book on being in AWE of it ALL. An autobiographical/philosophical discussion on appreciating life in ALL its forms of expression.]

I thought, if I’m going to have a role model or mentor, this is the woman to have! So, in honor of Carrie Jacobs Bond and her inspiration to women all over; I introduced my character ELVISA out on youtube today!

I’ve also jumped full-body into the life pool and started to advertise my: HA HA Helen of LAFOLOT LAF-O-GRAM service. My purpose being to bring positive, healthy outlooks to the folks I’ll be hired to bring CHEER!

OK to say, ‘no’

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Coming from a background of social awkwardness; to learning how to socialize in a healthy way through 12 Step Programs and counseling; evolving into a strong, independent, self-assured, motivational speaker, business owner, etc. – I was thrilled, when I offered one of my ‘marketing stress reliever pinwheels’ to a woman and she chose to say ‘no’.

Not that it matters, she appeared to be from mid-Eastern background. Being a 3rd generation Hungarian-American, I can understand cultural guidelines.

So, when she responded ‘no’, I smiled – withdrew the offer. I said, ‘I’m a laughter yoga’ instructor – I use these to teach people how to take a deep breath and release it – while having fun with the pinwheel.’ I said, ‘It’s actually not a toy.’ She smiled.

I went to pay my bill, the woman’s food was ready. She saw me laughing and joking with the owner, since I know them well. She looked to me and ‘APOLOGIZED!’ I said: ‘Oh No! It’s quite alright to say ‘no’!’ It’s a very HEALTHY thing to do! [I learned that 'no' is an okay announce, and NO explanation is needed as a follow-up!]
I’m glad you felt comfortable telling me ‘no’. She smiled and thanked me. I said: ‘There is NO GUILT involved in not accepting an offer from me!’ She laughed!

So, KUDOS, to this wonderful, self-assured woman who felt comfortable in responding with a ‘healthy no’ – with no explanation, needed.

HOORAY!

Block? Pause, Be Mindfull, Redirect

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

This is a continuation of a recent blog talking about: Blocks? Make Building Blocks!

I had to laugh at myself the other day; actually, I do that most days! I was in a pleasant mood, driving home from lunch, thinking what a beautiful, crisp March day it was. I thought, ‘What a great day for a walk!’ I thought, ‘I’ll get out and take a walk as soon as a I get home!’

So, as I turn into my condo development, once again the same ‘chatty’ condo owner that blocks the condo development exit by stopping people in their cars to talk to them, was doing it again! My pleasant mood went immediately to pissed off, mood as I got stuck; with no way around her – as she sat in her car talking to another condo owner!

Well, this time, she actually started to drive forward after she saw me behind her. But, being me, the BLOCK annoyed me and my mind started. (gotta laugh at myself)

I park my car, (while stewing about BLOCK lady); [The comedian/actor Danny Thomas actually did an entire skit about this!]
I start to walk back to my condo unit (while stewing about block lady);
I get distracted (while stewing about block lady), and start to fix a landscaping ornament;
I open my condo unit door (while stewing about block lady);
I ‘sniff’ the pet litter box (while stewing about BLOCK lady);
I open the cat litter box door area to clean out the boxes (while stewing about BLOCK lady);
I then notice that I have tracked mud all over the living room carpet (due to being distracted stewing about BLOCK lady);
I think (no problem, I know Oxyclean will take that right out of the carpet) – (while stewing about block lady);
I remove my walking shoes to stop further tracking of the mud (gotten while stepping into the landscaping area to reposition a lawn ornament – while stewing about BLOCK lady);
Stop at my bathroom for a pit stop;
Do some other things;
Get on my computer;
See a note posted by a friend that SUDDENLY reminds me -
I FORGOT TO TAKE MY WALK! (due to allowing myself to be blocked, and stew about condo lady)!
HA HA had to laugh at myself and my mis-direction as a result of allowing my view of one, momentary event to throw me off the track.

So, this morning, I got up and had an enlightened moment! AH HA!
Next time I ‘feel’ I am being BLOCKED on a physical or mental path due to a distraction; rather than be annoyed, I made up this mantra: BLOCK? PAUSE, BE MINDFULL, RE-DIRECT

In this way, I can acknowledge what I see as the block -
CHOOSE to pause -
CHOOSE to take that moment to breathe, relax and be mindfull -
Allowing me to be open to new opportunities, new directions, and maybe set off in a new direction.

Maybe that block has a purpose?

So here’s to BLOCK, PAUSE, BE, REDIRECT

This has been a Highlighted, Ha Ha Helen of LAFOLOT moment -
May all your days, minutes, moments BE………..
